For over three and one half years I have been letting my hair grow so I could donate it to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs from human hair for young chemotherapy patients.
We "seasoned" ladies can donate, as well, but our lovely silver locks will be sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing the wigs for the youngsters. Hair must be 10 inches, tip to tip. I was going to wait until my birthday in July to cut it, but with the gardening season quickly coming, I felt like I needed a shorter style so I could pop in and out of the shower as often as needed.
Yesterday, I took the plunge and had my 14 inch ponytail cut! It went from this:
To this:
To this:
How odd it feels not to have all that hair on my neck!
But it certainly feels good to have done something for someone in need. Working in the medical field, I see the devastation of the effects of chemotherapy and I'm happy to have helped in this small way. This personal donation was so much more satisfying than sending a check to some charity only to have most of the money spent on "administrative costs".

Well done, Giddy! A great cause and you have a great new hairdo just in time for summer gardening (assuming your snow melts soon). And I must say how pretty your gray hair is!
That is an awesome commitment, Giddy! Two years to grow and a new 'do! You are a generous soul!
ooops...I was so struck by your sacrifice I forgot to say how shiney and healthy your new hair looks!
I'm actually missing my ponytail. It was so easy to just pull it back and go, but the short hair certainly does dry faster! I'm also having to learn how to "style" all over again.
Hi Giddy,
I came here from Kerri's Thinking Blogger Post.
What a wonderful cause "Locks of Love" is.
My daughter in law is a PA and also learned of this organization through her work. She and both my granddaughters donated their long locks two yrs ago
Your hairstyle looks breezy and easy care!!
:)
You hair looks wonderful, and you did a very good thing! I have never grown my hair much longer than your short do!
Are you getting this storm? We haven't lost power, but are pumping water out of the cellar.
Oh yes, are we ever getting this storm. Both yesterday and today are nasty with rain and high winds. Fortunately, we are not getting the flooding that southern Maine is experiencing. We sit high on a bluff so there is no danger to us from the ocean.
Hello Giddy,
I also came here from the thinking post on Kerri's blog, and want to say you are one wonderful, generous woman, and your new hair looks quite striking. Now who knows what new thoughts will pop into your suddenly unrestricted head!

Giddy,
What a wonderful thing to do!
I'm sure you will enjoy the new do during the hot weather.
It is such a pain to dry longer hair. I grow mine longer during the summer so I can pull it up, but I hate to wash and style it.
I do envy those who can do one of those wash and wear styles, but it's just not meant to be for me.
I like your new look! And what a worthy cause. Well done!
