Oh, My!

What am I going to do with all this yellow squash?!!!

We've had several days of rain and thunderstorms and I hadn't been able to get out to the garden to check on things. When I finally was able to take a look - here's what I saw:

The neighbors are already hiding when they see me coming, so I went on line to find some interesting squash recipes and I found a really good one for Chocolate Zucchini Bundt Cake. I just substituted the zukes for yellow squash. H has declared it a winner and said he would never have believed it had squash in it. I think I'll slice, blanch and freeze the rest of it, as I also found several really yummy sounding casserole recipes.

The plants continue to look frighteningly healthy and full of more baby squashes. I think I'd better not wait to check anymore, even if I need an umbrella!

It was still too wet to mow the lawn, so I took my trusty camera out to see what was blooming, and to my delight, the dahlias have begun their summer show.

I saved this little beauty from the Clinic. A sweet, elderly patient had brought it in for the staff to enjoy, and before they could throw it out, I snatched it and brought it home. That was three years ago, and every year, I faithfully dig it up and store it until the next spring. It's a nice remembrance of that dear, little lady.

I'm surprised I could get a good photo of this one - it's an almost black, burgundy. The blooms are smaller than most of my other dahlias, but the plant itself is very tall.

I think Sluggo missed this grasshopper as he spends every nice afternoon in the yard pouncing on every insect he can find.

The Gloriosa Daisies have reseeded themselves everywhere. The rock garden in the back of the house is overrun with them, but the blooming carpet is so beautiful I can't bring myself to thin them out. The dooryard garden, however, has seen me brutally yanking out the seedlings. This was one of the exceptions as it looked so healthy and thick.

The daylilies are putting on quite a show, as well......

And, of course, Ruby Spider is magnificent. This bloom is huge! Almost the size of a dinner plate.

And so ends another day enjoying the sweet days of summer. I was so dismayed to find that we have now lost 40 minutes of our daylight. Summer days are so fleeting. Sigh.

40 minutes gone already? How depressing!

That pink dahlia looks like Park Princess. It has always been a favorite of mine. I have one just starting to bloom now.

About January '09 you will be very happy to have that squash in the freezer! My Dad still has not given me any. Maybe he didn't plant it this year.

Every time I see yours I get hungry for pan fried summer squash--just a little butter to fry it in and salt pepper. YUM!

The dahlias are gorgeous. Do you stake and if so what's your favorite stake to use. Do you dig up your plants in the fall, if so how do you store them?
I used to grow them but had trouble keeping them over winter. I tried newspapers, sawdust, and paper bags. They always turned to dust or rotted.

Zoey, thanks for identifying my pink Dahlia! Sure wish I could send you some of this squash.

Jane Marie, I don't stake the dahlias as they have very strong stalks. I dig them up every October and just throw them into a paper grocery bag. I store them in an unheated room downstairs that usually stays between 45- 50 degrees. In early May, I pot them up to get them growing and then plant them outside around the middle of June when the ground warms up. So far, it seems to be working.

Your squash looked so yummy! I planted an Alba de Trombichini Zucchini. It is now growing madly up a trellis and twining around everything.Flowers are just starting to form.The fruits should be light green and shaped like a small trombone.They taste wonderful steamed and lightly coated with olive oil and a wee bit of garlic salt.

If Zoey's right about your pink dahlia being Park Princess, then I have it too! I love that burgandy one as well. I have Ruffled Apricot, which I think I mentioned last year. She's been a real beauty this summer. We saw your Ruby Spider at the lily farm and thought of you :) The bloom really is huge!
Yum, chocolate zucchini cake is delicious! We too have plenty of yellow squash to give away, plus zucchini!!
I have the same problem with my Gloriosas and end up leaving far too many. But they are gorgeous :)
My computer is broken at the moment (boo hoo!) so I'm using Hubby's until he kicks me off.

Giddy, here is a recipe for yellow squash-
Slice longwise and dip in batter below

3/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
1 egg

Fry squash in a bit of good oil. Eat plain, or top with baking sauce and mozzarella cheese.

This batter is great for onion rings and shrimp, too.
